Accident Free Yuletide: FRSC Meets Stakeholders
Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)Anambra Command on Wednesday conveyed a consultative forum of stake holders of petroleum products carrying vehicles, Tipper operators and other articulated vehicles in the state.
The State Sector Commander of FRSC, Andrew A Kumapayi (CC) in his opening remarks said that the essence of the meeting was to sensitize stakeholders and deliberate on issues relating to safety of operators and other road users especially during the Yuletide.
He noted that articulated vehicles have the highest percentage of crashes in the state. About 40 percent of the crashes according to him are speed related, loss of control, fatigue on the part of drivers.
Kumapayi stressed the need for stakeholders' meeting on quarterly basis to fashion ways of stemming the ugly trend and avoid unnecessary break down of trucks on the highways.
The Sector Commander urged the operators to ensure regular checking and mentainance of their vehicles, use of manifolds and safety valve up and down to avoid leakages in an event of crash.
He said further that the capacity of truck head should commensurate with the body to avoid excess load.
Kumapayi urged them to operate in total compliance with Covid-19 protocols by providing hand washing equipment, running water in parks and terminals, use of face marks and provision of personal protective gardgets for drivers and motor boys and as well provide notices in conspicuous locations to guide visitors in parks and terminals.
The representatives of various Unions NUPENG, PTD, IPMAN and Tipper Union in their separate speeches commended the Sector Commander and called on the government to fix the roads and provide them with trailer parks to ease their operations in the state.
The National Secretary of Tipper Drivers Association, Mr Jerry Ifejika however expressed dissatisfaction over the government imposition of non members as their leaders.
Ifejika said that the body will block the highways as a protest against the government's undue interference.
The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Petroleum and Union matters Hon. Peter Nwosu in his speech commended the Sector Commander for his initiative and informed him that it has been adopted as a rule in all depots that no truck carry more than 45000 liters of product and the capacity of truck head must be able to carry the body.
He called on the operators and the leaders of PTD, IPMAN, NUPENG and Tipper Unions to endeavor to comply with Safety rules regarding their operations.
Hon Nwosu equally urged them to desist from drunk driving and illegal parking of trucks.
