The Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) governorship candidate in Anambra 2021, Mr Valentine Ozigbo has called for sweeping reforms in Nigeria's labour laws to protect workers' rights, prevent workplace abuses, and ensure fair remuneration.
Ozigbo, the immediate past President and Group CEO of Transcorp Plc, made the call in his May Day statement issued from his campaign office in Awka.
The multiple-award-winning global CEO hailed Nigerian workers for their resilience and commended them for being "the backbone of Nigeria's economy and development".
He decried the work conditions that Nigerian workers have to endure and the lack of protection and enforcement of rights for workers. He also called for meaningful changes in the "code" to end workplace discrimination.
"Today, I celebrate Nigerian workers and commend their commitment to the Nigerian project despite all odds," Ozigbo said.
"Nigerian workers operate under some of the harshest conditions, and a weak legal framework and slow-grinding court system are not doing much to protect workers and prevent workplace abuse.
"As a country, we must realise that Nigerian workers are the backbone of our economy and our development, and as such, we need to prioritise their well-being and do what it takes to protect their rights.
"I use this occasion of Workers' Day to call, yet again, for sweeping reforms in our country's labour laws. Workers must be protected from abuse, and the government must intervene to ensure that Nigerian workers are adequately compensated and end exploitation," he added.
