Enugu Commissioner Commends WINET, CSOs for Advancing Fight Against Gender-Based Violence

The Enugu State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, has commended the Women Information Network (WINET) and other civil society organisations (CSOs) for their commitment and sacrifices in the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the state.

Enih gave the commendation on Monday when the WINET team and its Women Rights Organisation partners paid her an advocacy visit in Enugu as part of the implementation of the "Strengthening Women Rights Organizations for Gender-Based Violence Prevention" project.

The commissioner praised the organisations for sustaining advocacy against GBV despite challenges associated with inadequate funding, limited resources and time constraints.

She noted that the efforts of WINET and other CSOs have contributed significantly to raising awareness on Gender-Based Violence and encouraging more survivors to speak out and seek support.

According to her, cultural beliefs and societal norms remain major factors driving the prevalence of GBV in many communities, stressing that sustained advocacy and sensitisation are critical to changing harmful attitudes and behaviours.

Enih expressed optimism that ongoing awareness campaigns by government and non-state actors are gradually yielding positive results.

She also stressed the need for stronger collaboration among government institutions, civil society organisations, development partners and communities to effectively address the menace.

The commissioner engaged the advocacy team in discussions on how society can re-orientate individuals towards non-violent behaviour and foster healthy relationships.

She emphasised the importance of understanding human behaviour, personality differences and relationship dynamics, noting that these factors often shape how people respond to conflicts and interpersonal challenges.

Enih further highlighted funding constraints facing the ministry in implementing programmes aimed at addressing Gender-Based Violence, while reiterating government's commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to protect women, girls and vulnerable persons.

Earlier, the Programme Manager of WINET, Mrs. Ijeoma Obinna-Onwuka, said the project is supported by the Amandla Institute for Policy and Leadership Advancement (AIPLA) and seeks to strengthen collective efforts towards preventing and responding to Gender-Based Violence.

Obinna-Onwuka appreciated the commissioner for the warm reception and insightful engagement, describing the interaction as encouraging and valuable to the success of the project.

She reaffirmed WINET's commitment to collaborating with government institutions, development partners, civil society organisations, community leaders and citizens to build a society free from violence and discrimination.

According to her, only through collective action can safer communities be created where women, girls and vulnerable persons can live with dignity, security and equal opportunities.

She added that WINET would continue to champion initiatives aimed at preventing Gender-Based Violence and promoting the rights and wellbeing of women and vulnerable groups across Enugu State.
