Govt Pledges Support For WINET's Anti-GBV Campaign In Abia

The Abia State Ministry of Women Affairs has pledged its support for the Women Information Network (WINET)'s campaign against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), reaffirming its commitment to initiatives aimed at protecting and empowering women and girls across the state.

The commitment was made when WINET paid an advocacy visit to the ministry as part of the implementation of its project, "Strengthening Women Rights Organizations for Gender-Based Violence Prevention."

Receiving the WINET delegation, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr Maureen Ijeoma Aghukwa, commended the organisation for its efforts towards addressing Gender-Based Violence and promoting the rights and welfare of women.

Dr Aghukwa assured the delegation that the ministry remains open to collaborations with organisations whose programmes align with the state's vision of improving the socio-economic wellbeing of women and girls.

She noted that the administration of Governor Alex Otti, through the Office of the First Lady, has continued to prioritise women's empowerment, protection and inclusion as key components of sustainable development in Abia State.

According to the commissioner, several interventions are currently being implemented by the state government in partnership with development agencies to improve the living conditions of women.

She cited empowerment programmes being supported through collaborations involving the World Bank and the Abia State Government, stressing that efforts are ongoing to expand the initiatives to benefit more women across the state's 17 local government areas.

Dr Aghukwa also highlighted the successes recorded under the Ahia Oma Market Women Initiative, through which women from various local government areas have received training and empowerment support to strengthen their businesses.

She explained that beneficiaries of the initiative were provided with items such as umbrellas and aprons to boost their businesses and improve their livelihoods.

The commissioner expressed appreciation to WINET for the advocacy visit and assured the organisation that she would brief the Wife of the Governor and First Lady of Abia State on the discussions with a view to exploring possible areas of partnership.

Earlier, the WINET team briefed the commissioner on the objectives of the "Strengthening Women Rights Organizations for Gender-Based Violence Prevention" project, which is supported by the Amandla Institute for Policy and Leadership Advancement (AIPLA).

According to the organisation, the project seeks to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders in preventing and responding effectively to Gender-Based Violence while promoting the rights of women and girls.

WINET stressed that ending GBV requires collective action involving government institutions, civil society organisations, traditional institutions and other critical stakeholders.

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to fostering strategic partnerships that will advance gender equality, combat Gender-Based Violence and create safer and more inclusive communities for women and girls.

The advocacy visit forms part of WINET's broader engagement strategy aimed at mobilising institutional support and strengthening coordinated responses to Gender-Based Violence in Abia State.
